Copyright protects creative and innovative work. This protection means that copyright holders themselves decide how their work can be used. This basic right ensures that artists and innovators can make a living as creative workers.

It is important to remember that the internet is also subject to copyright restrictions

The Norwegian Copyright Act regulates the protection and usage of literary, scientific and artistic works of every kind. The regulations ensure that the work of authors, composers, film makers and other creators receives protection from piracy and illegal copying.

Copyright legislation also protects work that is not directly classed as intellectual work, but is closely related to intellectual work and copyright – so called associated rights. These regulations protect the rights of creative artists such as actors, musicians and producers of sound and film recordings. There are also regulations that give protection to broadcasting companies against misuse of broadcasting signals.
